Sodium-dependent glucose transporters (SGLTs) couple a downhill Na ion gradient to actively transport sugars. Here, we investigate the impact of the membrane potential on vSGLT structure and function using sugar uptake assays, double electron-electron resonance (DEER), electrostatic calculations, and kinetic modeling. Negative membrane potentials, as present in all cell types, shift the conformational equilibrium of vSGLT towards an outward-facing conformation, leading to increased sugar transport rates.

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in captive large felids is a commonly encountered syndrome that is usually treated medically, with surgical cases only sparsely documented in the literature. This case series describes the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and postoperative care of three cases of IVDD in large felids: an 8-yr-old male Bengal tiger () with acute paraplegia, a 10-yr-old male tiger of unknown subspecies () with progressive tetraparesis, and a 17-yr-old female African lion () with mild paraparesis. Two cases were diagnosed via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the third was diagnosed with computed tomography myelography.

This study explored the potential role of victim advocacy in Native American missing person cases. Interviews with 25 tribal and non-tribal victim/social service providers were conducted to assess their perspectives on the factors which make Native Americans vulnerable to going missing, the barriers and challenges regarding reporting and investigating missing persons, as well as how victim/social service providers might better support the families of missing persons. Findings suggest that advocates perceive that responding to and offering services for Native families who experience a missing loved one will be extremely difficult because of the intersection of isolation, poverty, and jurisdictional complexities among tribal lands, combined with social service providers and law enforcement officers' lack of resources and training regarding cultural sensitivity.

Purpose: Locking plate fixation of caprine tibial segmental defects is widely utilized for translational modeling of human osteopathology, and it is a useful research model in tissue engineering and orthopedic biomaterials research due to its inherent stability while maintaining unobstructed visualization of the gap defect and associated healing. Objectives And Design: Information about providing professional and appropriate perinatal care to transgender men in the perinatal setting is scarce, and healthcare providers often have insufficient knowledge or skills to provide this care. In response, a quality improvement educational program for nursing staff was developed and implemented, with the goal of evaluating the impact of this intervention on nurses' knowledge, skills, and attitudes when caring for pregnant transgender men.

Setting And Participants: The training was offered to nursing staff of a 24-bed inpatient perinatal unit at a large, private academic medical center in a major East Coast city during the unit's quarterly staff meeting in March 2020.

A light scalar field framework of dark energy, sometimes referred to as quintessence, introduces a fifth force between normal matter objects. Screening mechanisms, such as the chameleon model, allow the scalar field to be almost massless on cosmological scales while simultaneously evading laboratory constraints. We explore the ability of existing mechanical systems to directly detect the fifth force associated with chameleons in an astrophysically viable regime where it could be dark energy.

Glucose-galactose malabsorption (GGM) is due to mutations in the gene coding for the intestinal sodium glucose cotransporter SGLT1 (SLC5A1). Here we identify the rare variant Gln457Arg (Q457R) in a large pedigree of patients in the Västerbotten County in Northern Sweden with the clinical phenotype of GGM. The functional effect of the Q457R mutation was determined in protein expressed in oocytes using biophysical and biochemical methods.

Particles or waves scattered from a rotating black hole can be amplified through the process of Penrose superradiance, although this cannot currently be observed in an astrophysical setting. Here we theoretically show that analog Penrose superradiance arises naturally in the field of nonlinear optics. A loosely focused signal beam can experience gain or amplification as it glances off a strong vortex pump beam in a nonlinear defocusing medium.
