Introduction: Liver acceptance patterns vary significantly between transplant centers. Data pertaining to outcomes of livers declined by local and regional centers and allocated nationally remains limited.

Project Aim: The objective was to compare post-liver transplant outcomes between liver allografts transplanted as a result of national and local-regional allocation.

Expanding Liver Transplant Opportunities in Older Patients With Nonconventional Grafts.

Introduction: Broader use of donation after circulatory death (DCD) and nonconventional grafts for liver transplant helps reduce disparities in organ availability. Limited data, however, exists on outcomes specific to nonconventional graft utilization in older patients. As such, this study aimed to investigate outcomes specific to conventional and nonconventional graft utilization in recipients > 70 y of age.

Decreasing Significance of Early Allograft Dysfunction with Rising Use of Nonconventional Donors.

Background and Objectives: Early allograft dysfunction (EAD) is considered a surrogate marker for adverse post-liver transplant (LT) outcomes. With the increasing use of nonconventional donors, EAD has become a more frequent occurrence. Given this background, we aimed to assess the prevalence and impact of EAD in an updated cohort inclusive of both conventional and nonconventional liver allografts.

Building Patient-Physician Trust: A Medical Student Perspective.

Public trust in physicians has declined over the last 50 years. Future physicians will need to mend the patient-physician trust relationship. In conjunction with the American Medical Association's Accelerating Change in Medical Education initiative, the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine implemented the Science of Health Care Delivery (SHCD) curriculum-a 4-year curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinary training across population-centered care; person-centered care; team-based care; high-value care; leadership; and health policy, economics, and technology-in 2015.

Therapeutic benefit of the anesthesiologist-patient relationship.

The psychologic effect of the preoperative visit by an anesthetist has been compared with the effect of pentobarbital for preanesthetic medication. Patients receiving pentobarbital 1 hour before an operation became drowsy but it could not be shown that they became calm. Patients who had received a visit by an anesthetist before operation (informing them about the events which were to occur on the day of operation and about the anesthetic to be administered) were not drowsy but were more likely to be calm on the day of operation.

A phase II study of bevacizumab and erlotinib as initial treatment for metastatic non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer with serum proteomic evaluation.

Background: Erlotinib alone or bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy improve survival in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The current trial of erlotinib and bevacizumab was designed as an alternative to initial conventional chemotherapy for advanced lung cancer and a platform to explore selection factors.

Methods: Eligibility criteria included stage IIIB/IV or recurrent non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer (NSNSCLC), no prior chemotherapy for metastatic disease, PS=0-1, and no history of brain metastases for the first 40 patients.

Adaptation of problem-solving treatment for prevention of depression among low-income, culturally diverse mothers.

Adapting evidence-based interventions to be more accessible and culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations is a potential strategy to address disparities in mental health care. We adapted an evidence-based depression-treatment strategy, Problem-Solving Treatment, to prevent depression among low-income mothers with vulnerable children. Intervention adaptations spanned 3 domains: (1) the intervention's new prevention focus, (2) conducting a parent-focused intervention in venues oriented to children; and (3) cultural competency.

Problem-solving education to prevent depression among low-income mothers of preterm infants: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

We sought to assess the feasibility and document key study processes of a problem-solving intervention to prevent depression among low-income mothers of preterm infants. A randomized controlled pilot trial (n = 50) of problem-solving education (PSE) was conducted. We assessed intervention provider training and fidelity; recruitment and retention of subjects; intervention acceptability; and investigators' ability to conduct monthly outcome assessments, from which we could obtain empirical estimates of depression symptoms, stress, and functioning over 6 months.

Sugar-coaters and straight talkers: communicating about developmental delays in primary care.

Objectives: The goals were to investigate parents' and early intervention (EI) specialists' beliefs and experiences regarding discussing child development in primary care and to identify communication barriers and opportunities.

Methods: Focus groups were held with (1) mothers of young children with typical development, (2) mothers of young children who received EI services, and (3) EI specialists. Seven groups (N = 46 participants) were conducted in the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area.

The nucleic acids of neonatal calf diarrhea virus were characterized by isopycnic centrifugation in Cs2SO4, electron microscopy, ultraviolet absorbance temperature profiles and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These studies indicated that the neonatal calf diarrhea virus genome consists of 11 segments of double stranded RNA with a total molecular weight of 10.75 million daltons.
