Objective: The electronic health record (EHR) has been faulted for the erosion of interprofessional communication and the patient-physician relationship. Surgical residents may be susceptible to communication workarounds facilitated by the EHR, but the full extent is not well understood. Precision lattice spacing comparison measurements at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provide traceability of X-ray wavelength and powder diffraction standards to the international system of units (SI). Here, we both summarize and document key measurements from the last two decades on six lots of intrinsic float-zone silicon, including unpublished results and recent internal-consistency checks. The comparison measurements link the unknown lattice spacing of a test crystal to a standard crystal for which the lattice spacing has been accurately determined by X-ray/optical interferometry in units traceable to the definition of the meter.

Background: Nipple-sparing mastectomy through an inframammary fold incision (NSM-IMF) with implant-based reconstruction (IBR) is a cosmetically preferable approach to breast cancer treatment in appropriate candidates. However, patients who have undergone prior cosmetic breast surgery (CBS) may be at increased risk for postoperative complications secondary to existing surgical scars.

One of the most striking predictions of Einstein's special theory of relativity is also perhaps the best known formula in all of science: E=mc(2). If this equation were found to be even slightly incorrect, the impact would be enormous--given the degree to which special relativity is woven into the theoretical fabric of modern physics and into everyday applications such as global positioning systems. Here we test this mass-energy relationship directly by combining very accurate measurements of atomic-mass difference, Delta(m), and of gamma-ray wavelengths to determine E, the nuclear binding energy, for isotopes of silicon and sulphur.

We discuss the connection of high-energy gamma-ray measurements with precision atomic mass determinations. These rather different technologies, properly combined, are shown to lead to new values for the neutron mass and the molar Planck constant. Clinical efficacy of diagnostic radiology for mammographic examinations is critically dependent on source characteristics, detection efficiency, image resolution and applied high voltage. In this report we focus on means for evaluation of source-dependent issues including noninvasive determination of the applied high voltage, and characterization of intrinsic spectral distributions which in turn reflect the effects of added filtration and target and window contamination. It is shown that a particular form of x-ray curved crystal spectrometry with electronic imaging can serve to determine all relevant parameters within the confines of a standard clinical exposure.

The lattice spacing comparator established at the National Institute of Standards and Technology to measure the lattice spacing differences between nearly perfect crystals is described in detail. Lattice spacing differences are inferred from the measured differences in Bragg angles for different crystals. The comparator is a two crystal spectrometer used in the nearly nondispersive geometry.

A description is given of lasers stabilized to components of the (129)I(2) spectrum in the region of the 633-nm laser lines for (3)He-(20)Ne and (3)He-(22)Ne.
