Objectives: To review the management of spontaneous ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma in the acute phase, the definitive treatment after hemostasis, and the prognosis.
Data Sources: A MEDLINE search was undertaken to identify articles in English from 1970 to 2004 using the key words "hepatocellular carcinoma," "spontaneous rupture," "therapeutic embolization," and "laparoscopy." Additional articles were identified by a manual search of the references from the key articles.

Despite the high incidence of speech and voice impairment, studies suggest that only 3-4% of people with PD receive speech treatment. The authors review the literature on the characteristics and features of speech and voice disorders in people with PD, the types of treatment techniques available, including medical, surgical, and behavioral therapies, and provide recommendations for the current efficacy of treatment interventions and directions of future research.

Methods: The medical and pathological records of 36 patients with a preoperative diagnosis of 'resectable' hilar cholangiocarcinoma operated on by us between January 1998 and December 2002 were studied. The clinical presentations, operative records, and pathology results were retrospectively reviewed.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are an extensive class of regulatory RNA whose specific functions in animals are generally unknown. Although computational methods have identified many potential targets of miRNAs, elucidating the spatial expression patterns of miRNAs is necessary to identify the sites of miRNA action. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on patients with carcinoma of gallbladder treated at the Division of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong from January 1997 to December 2002.
Results: Of the 47 patients with carcinoma of gallbladder, 28 patients were treated symptomatically because they were found to have metastatic disease (n = 22), unresectable disease (n = 2) or poor associated medical disease (n = 4).
Although hundreds of distinct animal microRNAs (miRNAs) are known, the specific biological functions of only a handful are understood at present. Here, we demonstrate that three different families of Drosophila miRNAs directly regulate two large families of Notch target genes, including basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) repressor and Bearded family genes. These miRNAs regulate Notch target gene activity via GY-box (GUCUUCC), Brd-box (AGCUUUA), and K-box (cUGUGAUa) motifs.

Delta is directly ubiquitinated by Drosophila and Xenopus Neuralized, and by zebrafish Mind bomb, two unrelated RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligases with common abilities to promote Delta endocytosis and signaling activity. Although orthologs of both Neuralized and Mind bomb are found in most metazoan organisms, their relative contributions to Notch signaling in any single organism have not yet been assessed.

Summary Background Data: Most HCC patients present with unresectable disease and are treated with chemotherapy or intra-arterial therapy with a palliative intent. Occasionally, there are good responses to treatment so that salvage surgery becomes feasible afterward.

Objective: To identify and compare the primary existential, physical, and psychosocial stressors affecting patients with ALS and their caregivers. Health care providers, together with patients and their caregivers, are challenged to identify both physical and psychosocial concerns that have the greatest impact on quality of life over the course of a serious illness. It is also helpful to understand the priorities of these concerns from the patients' and caregivers' perspectives so that we can render optimal care and help patients and their families with the myriad problems that accompany a progressive and fatal disease.
