Primary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the prostate is a rare disease that characteristically follows an indolent course. It is believed that infection or chronic inflammation may be triggers for malignant transformation in the prostate, but it is of unknown etiology. Reports of MALT lymphomas of the prostate with other concurrent primary prostate cancers are even more limited.

Current understanding of chronic pain points a decrease in level of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, in the spinal dorsal horn, leading to an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory pathways. A subcloned derivative of the human NT2 cell line (hNT2.17) which, after neuronal differentiation, secretes different inhibitory neurotransmitters such as GABA and glycine has been recently isolated.

WNT11 expression is induced by estrogen-related receptor alpha and beta-catenin and acts in an autocrine manner to increase cancer cell migration.

Elevated expression of the orphan nuclear receptor estrogen-related receptor α (ERRα) has been associated with a negative outcome in several cancers, although the mechanism(s) by which this receptor influences the pathophysiology of this disease and how its activity is regulated remain unknown. Using a chemical biology approach, it was determined that compounds, previously shown to inhibit canonical Wnt signaling, also inhibited the transcriptional activity of ERRα. The significance of this association was revealed in a series of biochemical and genetic experiments that show that (a) ERRα, β-catenin (β-cat), and lymphoid enhancer-binding factor-1 form macromolecular complexes in cells, (b) ERRα transcriptional activity is enhanced by β-cat expression and vice versa, and (c) there is a high level of overlap among genes previously shown to be regulated by ERRα or β-cat.

Three plutonium chelation cases at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Chelation treatments with dosages of 1 g of either Ca-DTPA (Trisodium calcium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) or Zn-DTPA (Trisodium zinc diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) were undertaken at Los Alamos Occupational Medicine in three recent cases of wounds contaminated with metallic forms of Pu. All cases were finger punctures, and each chelation injection contained the same dosage of DTPA. One subject was treated only once, while the other two received multiple injections.

The origin recognition complex (ORC) binds to the specific positions on chromosomes that serve as DNA replication origins. Although ORC is conserved from yeast to humans, the DNA sequence elements that specify ORC binding are not. In particular, metazoan ORC shows no obvious DNA sequence specificity, whereas yeast ORC binds to a specific DNA sequence within all yeast origins.

1,1 '-Diethyl-2,2'-cyanine iodide (decynium22; D22) is a potent blocker of the organic cation family of transporters (EMT/OCT) known to move endogenous monoamines like dopamine and norepinephrine across cell membranes. Decynium22 is a cation with a relatively high affinity for all members of the OCT family in both human and rat cells. The mechanism through which decynium22 blocks OCT transporters are poorly understood.

The effective concentration of epsilon-aminocaproic Acid for inhibition of fibrinolysis in neonatal plasma in vitro.

Introduction: Pediatric patients, particularly neonates, are at high risk for bleeding complications after cardiovascular surgery because of their immature hemostatic system, small size, and the complex operations they require. Activation of intravascular fibrinolysis is one of the principle effects of cardiopulmonary bypass that causes poor postoperative hemostasis. This complication has long been recognized and treated with antifibrinolytic medications, including the lysine analog epsilon aminocaproic acid (EACA).

Children with single-ventricle physiology do not benefit from higher hemoglobin levels post cavopulmonary connection: results of a prospective, randomized, controlled trial of a restrictive versus liberal red-cell transfusion strategy.

Objective: To examine the impact of a restrictive vs. liberal transfusion strategy on arterial lactate and oxygen content differences in children with single-ventricle physiology post cavopulmonary connection. Children with single-ventricle physiology are routinely transfused postoperatively to increase systemic oxygen delivery, and transfusion thresholds in this population have not been studied.

Conserved nucleosome positioning defines replication origins.

The origin recognition complex (ORC) specifies replication origin location. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae ORC recognizes the ARS (autonomously replicating sequence) consensus sequence (ACS), but only a subset of potential genomic sites are bound, suggesting other chromosomal features influence ORC binding. Using high-throughput sequencing to map ORC binding and nucleosome positioning, we show that yeast origins are characterized by an asymmetric pattern of positioned nucleosomes flanking the ACS.

Multimodal regulation of E2F1 gene expression by progestins.

An analysis of mRNA expression in T47D breast cancer cells treated with the synthetic progestin R5020 revealed a subset of progesterone receptor (PR) target genes that are enriched for E2F binding sites. Following up on this observation, we determined that PR-B acts in both direct and indirect manners to positively upregulate E2F1 expression in T47D cells. The direct effects of PR on E2F1 expression were confirmed by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analysis, which indicated that the agonist-bound receptor was recruited to several enhancer elements proximal to the E2F1 transcript.

Statins and breast cancer in postmenopausal women without hormone therapy.

Background: Epidemiological data on the association between statin use and risk of breast cancer among overweight or obese postmenopausal women who have never used hormone therapy (HT) is limited.

Patients And Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Fargo, ND, USA. Cases were overweight or obese, postmenopausal White women without a history of HT use who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Generalized tetanus despite prior vaccination and a protective level of anti-tetanus antibodies.

Because of the success of widespread vaccination, tetanus rarely occurs in developed countries such as the United States. Vaccination, however, is not entirely protective even if patients develop an adequate antibody response. We discuss a case of generalized tetanus in an individual with both a history of prior vaccination and a measurable level of anti-tetanus antibodies at the time of presentation.

Ischemia Increases TREK-2 Channel Expression in Astrocytes: Relevance to Glutamate Clearance.

The extent of an ischemic insult is less in brain regions enriched in astrocytes suggesting that astrocytes maintain function and buffer glutamate during ischemia. Astrocytes express a wide variety of potassium channels to support their functions including TREK-2 channels which are regulated by polyunsaturated fatty acids, intracellular acidosis and swelling; conditions that pertain to ischemia. The present study investigated the possible involvement of TREK-2 channels in cultured cortical astrocytes during experimental ischemia (anoxia/hypoglycemia) by examining TREK-2 protein levels, channel activity and ability to clear glutamate.

Beware of the pet dog: a case of Staphylococcus intermedius infection.

Staphylococcus intermedius is a common commensal and pathogen in dogs and cats and only rarely has been identified as causing human infection. We report a human case of postoperative sinus infection caused by methicillin-resistant S. intermedius.

Clinical feasibility for cell therapy using human neuronal cell line to treat neuropathic behavioral hypersensitivity following spinal cord injury in rats.

Management of neuropathic pain remains problematic; however, cell therapy to treat the effects of pain on the sensory system after spinal cord injury (SCI) could be a useful approach. Since many clinical trials ultimately do not succeed, use of cell therapy will require that safety and efficacy issues be addressed early in preclinical rat studies. We used the human neuronal cell line hNT2.

Modality effects in sentence recall.

The authors examined the intrusion of lures into sentence recall when manipulating the modality of distractor-word lists and sentences separately. Participants received a list of words followed by a sentence, and the list did or did not contain a lure related to a target in the sentence. Conceptual regeneration of the sentence during recall predicted higher lure intrusions than spontaneous intrusions in all conditions.

The declining incidence of syphilis during the 1990s reversed beginning in 2001, with most of the new cases occurring in men who have sex with men. The taxonomy of the African dwarf crocodile (genus Osteolaemus) has been disputed since a novel morphotype was discovered in the early 20th Century. Because this poorly-known reptile is widely hunted throughout the forests of Central and West Africa, resolving the existence and extent of taxonomic units has important management and conservation implications. Lack of molecular data from individuals of known origin and historical disagreement on diagnostic morphological characters have hindered attempts to settle one of the most important taxonomic questions in the Crocodylia.

Use of vapor pressure deficit to predict humidity and temperature effects on the mortality of mold mites, Tyrophagus putrescentiae.

The mold mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Shrank), frequently infests a variety of stored food products in ideal, but rather limited conditions. Major factors limiting survival of this mite are the temperature and humidity imposed on T. putrescentiae as it develops within and disperses among sites.

Mitochondrial DNA damage is a hallmark of chemically induced and the R6/2 transgenic model of Huntington's disease.

Many forms of neurodegeneration are associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are prominent targets of oxidative damage, however, it is not clear whether mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage and/or its lack of repair are primary events in the delayed onset observed in Huntington's disease (HD). We hypothesize that an age-dependent increase in mtDNA damage contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction in HD.
