In this perspective, we will discuss the impact of some of the most recent advancements in materials discovery, particularly focusing on the role of robotics, artificial intelligence, and self-driving laboratories, as well as their implications for the Swiss research landscape. While it seems timely to aim for broad, revolutionary breakthroughs in this field, we argue that more incremental steps - such as, for example, fully automatic grinding of solid powders or fully automated Rietveld refinements - may have a more significant impact on materials discovery, at least in the short run. An extremely pronounced anisotropy manifesting itself in qualitative and quantitative differences of all quantities measured along the in-plane a and b crystallographic directions is found. In particular, a qualitatively different dependence of the conductivities σ and σ on temperature and gate voltage, accompanied by orders of magnitude differences in their values (σ /σ ≈ 3 × 10 to 10 at low temperature and negative gate voltage) are observed, together with a different behavior of the longitudinal magnetoresistance in the two directions and the complete absence of the Hall effect in transverse resistance measurements.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn the first part of this paper, we introduced a modified rotating biological contactor (RBC) for the biological treatment of waste gas, and demonstrated its feasibility by applying the process to the biodegradation of toluene in a 91-liter reactor containing 20 biofilm support discs with a diameter of 40 cm [1]. We showed that the proposed system allows the unlimited growth of the biofilm to be suppressed, hence eliminating the risk of clogging associated with other biological waste gas treatment systems. Furthermore, we observed stationary long-term performance for more than one year under typical standard operating conditions.
