Background: Autosomal dominant progranulin (GRN) mutations are a common genetic cause of frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Though clinical trials for GRN-related therapies are underway, there is an unmet need for biomarkers that can predict symptom onset and track disease progression. We previously showed that presymptomatic GRN carriers exhibit thalamocortical hyperconnectivity that increases with age when they are presumably closer to symptom onset.

Emerging tick-borne orthonairovirus infections pose a growing global concern, with limited understanding of the viral ovarian tumor-like cysteine proteases (vOTUs) encoded by novel orthonairoviruses. These vOTUs, a group of deubiquinylases (DUBs), disrupt the innate immune response. Yezo virus (YEZV), a recently discovered pathogenic orthonairovirus, was first reported in Japan in 2021.

The role of TBC1D15 in sepsis-induced acute lung injury: Regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis and mitophagy.

Mitochondrial quality control is crucial in sepsis-induced acute lung injury (SI-ALI). Our study investigates how the intracellular protein TBC1D15 regulates mitochondrial quality to improve SI-ALI. We found TBC1D15 levels significantly decreased in the whole blood of sepsis patients, monocytes, lung tissue from SI-ALI mice, and the MLE-12 cellular model (mouse lung epithelial cells).

A multi-dimensional semantic pseudo-relevance feedback framework for information retrieval.

Pre-trained models have garnered significant attention in the field of information retrieval, particularly for improving document ranking. Typically, an initial retrieval step using sparse methods such as BM25 is employed to obtain a set of pseudo-relevant documents, followed by re-ranking with a pre-trained model. However, the semantic information captured by pre-trained models from sentences or passages is usually only applied to document ranking, with limited use in query expansion.

Silent Inflammation: A Case of Blurry Vision Raising Diagnostic Challenges in an Elderly Patient.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large vessel vasculitis with cranial and extracranial vessel involvement. Clinicians suspect GCA when a patient exhibits symptoms or exam findings of temporal headache with sudden vision loss, jaw or tongue claudication, scalp tenderness, abnormal temporal artery exam, and diagnostic findings, including elevated inflammatory markers. We present a case, which highlights that, despite established diagnostic measures, challenges persist.
