Wastewater Surveillance for Poliovirus in Selected Jurisdictions, United States, 2022-2023.

Wastewater testing can inform public health action as a component of polio outbreak response. During 2022-2023, a total of 7 US jurisdictions (5 states and 2 cities) participated in prospective or retrospective testing of wastewater for poliovirus after a paralytic polio case was identified in New York state. Two distinct vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 viruses were detected in wastewater from New York state and New York City during 2022, representing 2 separate importation events.

A UK-wide survey of community forensic services for adults with intellectual disability and/or autism.

Background: Specialist forensic community teams for people with intellectual disability and/or autism have been developed, but little is known about their extent and delivery.

Aims: To describe specialist forensic community teams for people with intellectual disability and/or autism across the UK.

Method: An online survey was sent to representatives of each UK Trust/Health Board providing adult mental health and/or intellectual disability services.

Person-centred care for older adults living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.

More than a fifth of people living with HIV in the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief-supported programmes are older individuals, defined as aged 50 years and older, yet optimal person-centred models of care for older adults with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, including screening and treatment for geriatric syndromes and common comorbidities associated with ageing, remain undefined. This Position Paper explores the disproportionate burden of comorbidities and geriatric syndromes faced by older adults with HIV, with a special focus on women. We seek to motivate global interest in improving quality of life for older people with HIV by presenting available research and identifying research gaps for common geriatric syndromes, including frailty and cognitive decline, and multimorbidity among older people with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.

The hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSANs) are a group of rare genetic disorders characterised by variable phenotypic expression affecting both sensory and autonomic dysfunction. Diagnosing these conditions can be a challenge as the presenting symptoms can be diverse and may overlap. This often leads to a delay in referral and diagnosis.

Surveillance for Acute Flaccid Myelitis - United States, 2018-2022.

Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a serious neurologic condition primarily affecting children; AFM can cause acute respiratory failure and permanent paralysis. AFM is a rare but known complication of various viral infections, particularly those of enteroviruses (EVs). Increases in AFM cases during 2014, 2016, and 2018 were associated with EV-D68 infection.
