Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed children under 18 with antibodies to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-Ab), focusing on those with encephalitis who didn’t fit the criteria for acute disseminated encephalitis (ADEM), comparing them to those with ADEM.
  • Out of 235 MOG-Ab positive patients, 33 had encephalitis and 74 had ADEM, with common symptoms including headache, seizures, and fever; 24% had a normal initial brain MRI.
  • Findings indicated that children with encephalitis were generally older, more often admitted to intensive care, and had a delayed start of steroid treatment, suggesting MOG-Ab testing is essential for suspected encephalitis

Paediatric acquired demyelinating syndromes (pADS) attack white matter pathways in the brain during an important period of development. Affected children can experience poor functional outcomes, including deficits in specific cognitive domains. Understanding risk factors for poor outcome will guide clinical management of these children.

Paediatric autoimmune encephalitis, including acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, are inflammatory brain diseases presenting with cognitive deficits, psychiatric symptoms, seizures, MRI and EEG abnormalities. Despite improvements in disease recognition and early immunotherapy, long-term outcomes in paediatric autoimmune encephalitis remain poor. Our aim was to understand functional connectivity changes that could be associated with negative developmental outcomes across different types of paediatric autoimmune encephalitis using magnetoencephalography.

Objectives: We aimed to study the risks of relapse and long term disability in children with non-MS acquired demyelinating syndromes (ADS).

Methods: In this prospective, multi-centre study, from the 14 UK pediatric neurology centres, children (<16 years) experiencing a first episode of ADS were recruited from 2010 to 2014. Case report forms were collected prospectively.

From transcription to decay, RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) influence RNA metabolism. Using the RBP2GO database that combines proteome-wide RBP screens from 13 species, we investigated the RNA-binding features of 176 896 proteins. By compiling published lists of RNA-binding domains (RBDs) and RNA-related protein family (Rfam) IDs with lists from the InterPro database, we analyzed the distribution of the RBDs and Rfam IDs in RBPs and non-RBPs to select RBDs and Rfam IDs that were enriched in RBPs.
