Model-based Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA) of polyethylene implants.

Model-based Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA) is able to measure the migration of metallic prostheses with submillimeter accuracy through contour-detection and 3D surface model matching techniques. However, contour-detection is only possible if the prosthesis is clearly visible in the radiograph; consequently Model-based RSA cannot be directly used for polymeric materials due to their limited X-ray attenuation; this is especially clinically relevant for all-polyethylene implants. In this study the radiopacity of unicompartmental Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) knee bearings was increased by diffusing an oil-based contrast agent into the surface to create three different levels of surface radiopacity.

Preconception counselling in women with epilepsy.

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are potentially high-risk periods for women with epilepsy and their babies. All women with epilepsy should have the opportunity for preconception counselling with the aim of reducing risk, optimising outcomes for the potentially developing fetus and enabling informed decision-making. This article provides an evidence-based framework for preconception counselling discussion, including the review of diagnosis and of current antiseizure medication, the risk to the fetus in relation to antiseizure medication and maternal seizures, maternal morbidity, SUDEP risk, folic acid supplements, contraception, breastfeeding and safety advice.

Modelling of longitudinally cut carrot curling induced by the vascular cylinder-cortex interference pressure.

Cut carrot pieces are popular convenience foods, which enable the use of misshapen or physiologically imperfect produce. Cut carrots curl due to residual stress, which limits their shelf life and causes unnecessary food waste. The aim of this study is to identify the geometrical and environmental factors which have the most influence on their longevity.

Production of antigenically stable enterovirus A71 virus-like particles in as a vaccine candidate.

Enterovirus A71 (EVA71) causes widespread disease in young children with occasional fatal consequences. In common with other picornaviruses, both empty capsids (ECs) and infectious virions are produced during the viral lifecycle. While initially antigenically indistinguishable from virions, ECs readily convert to an expanded conformation at moderate temperatures.
