Multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) applied to hyperspectral Raman imaging is extensively used to spatially and spectrally resolve the individual, pure chemical species within complex, heterogeneous samples. A critical aspect of performing MCR-ALS with hyperspectral Raman imaging is the selection of the number of chemical components within the experimental data. Several methods have previously been proposed to determine the number of chemical components, but it remains a challenging task that if done incorrectly, can lead to the loss of chemical information.

Article Synopsis
  • Some fluoride-containing toothpastes may not effectively release fluoride during brushing due to their formulation, affecting dental health benefits.* -
  • A new method using coiled filter paper was developed to measure the amount of fluoride that becomes available after a minute of brushing, providing a more accurate assessment of fluoride effectiveness in these products.* -
  • Testing revealed that while most toothpastes maintained a good level of bioavailable fluoride, some showed significantly lower levels, especially an aged disodium monofluorophosphate product, indicating that freshness and formulation are important for fluoride effectiveness.*
