Human pluripotent stem cell-derived β-cells (SC-β-cells) represent an alternative cell source for transplantation in diabetic patients. Although mitogens could in theory be used to expand β-cells, adult β-cells very rarely replicate. In contrast, newly formed β-cells, including SC-β-cells, display higher proliferative capacity and distinct transcriptional and functional profiles.

Plant exposure to metals is associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which mediate the oxidation of various molecules including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. The aim of the present study is the evaluation of the impact of short-term Cu and Pb treatment on oxidative events in the roots of soybean seedlings, with special emphasis on RNA oxidation. The results show that an increase in total RNA oxidative modification, 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHG), constitutes a very early response to both applied metals, observed already within the first hour of treatment.

The study of the serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases type 1 (TIMP1) was conducted involving 108 patients aged over 65, with calcinosis and/or calcific aortic valve (AV) stenosis. The purpose of the study was to identify the molecular and genetic markers responsible for the development of senile aortic stenosis. Besides, there was also typing of polymorphic loci of MMP9 gene A8202G (rs1169732) and TIMP1 gene C536T(rs11551797) performed.

Summary. The paper provides comparative characteristics of water quality in the assessment of a risk for intestinal infections in drinking water use. It has shown that of the greatest predictive value is direct detection of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, as well as the integral indicator determined by glucose fermentation, such as glucose-positive coliform bacteria.
