Background: Appendectomy could be open or laparoscopic. Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is gradually gaining ground in Nigeria, but its outcome is not entirely known.

Objective: This study compared the outcomes of LA with those of open appendectomy (OA) in terms of the surgical site infection rate, post-operative pain, time to return of bowel sounds, length of hospital stay, return to normal activities and direct cost of treatment.

Astrocytes are small star-shaped glial cells that maintain normal human brain physiology including secretion of several active compounds and the formation of blood brain barrier. Reactive astrocytes support regenerating axons and also, actuate some genes responsible for the induction of synapse formation. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalis seeds on hippocampal astrogliosis was probed using scopolamine-induced Alzheimer's type cognitive dysfunction Wistar rats.

Compound volvulus is an uncommon cause of acute abdomen and involves the twisting of the loops of ileum around the base of the sigmoid or vice versa. It is a surgical emergency that is often missed pre-operatively. We are reporting this case and reviewing the relevant literature to increase the awareness of this condition.
