Article Synopsis
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of childhood blindness, affecting 31.9% of premature infants, with 7.5% having severe cases; identifying risk factors is crucial for better detection and treatment.
  • A study at the Medical University of Vienna analyzed 352 premature infants (GA ≤ 32 weeks, BW ≤ 1500 g), finding that 40.9% had ROP, with significant risk factors being lower gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW).
  • The most common treatment was laser therapy, leading to initial regression in 82.4% of treated infants; the research emphasizes the importance of GA and BW in early detection and treatment decision-making for ROP

This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of ocular biometric parameters in pediatric patients with cataracts to optimize surgical outcomes. By evaluating various biometric data, we seek to enhance the decision-making process for intraocular lens (IOL) placement, particularly with advanced technologies like femtosecond lasers. This retrospective comparative study included pediatric patients with cataracts who underwent ocular biometric measurements and cataract extraction with anterior vitrectomy at the Medical University of Vienna between January 2019 and December 2021.

Purpose: To evaluate the postoperative outcome of strabismus surgery performed in children aged 1-6 years by investigating the change of the preoperative angle of deviation (AOD), elevation in adduction, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and refractive error.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of 62 children who received strabismus surgery between January 2018 and December 2021 at the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry of the Medical University of Vienna. Age, sex, type of strabismus, AOD, BCVA, refractive error and visual acuity were evaluated with respect to the postoperative outcome.
