The interaction between oxytocin and heparin.

Oxytocin (OXT) is a small cyclic peptide that is administered to pregnant women to induce birth in cases where labour is prolonged. It has previously been observed that patients taking a low molecular weight heparin, dalteparin (DAL), and then prescribed, OXT experienced a swifter labour compared to women given OXT alone. Herein are described the interactions between OXT and a number of heparin-based oligosaccharides; DAL; fondaparinux (FP), which is a synthetic heparin oligosaccharide that represents the predominant antithrombin binding-site, and a family of chemically-derived heparin hexasaccharides.

Is leaf area of Norway spruce ( L. Karst.) and European larch ( Mill.) affected by mixture proportion and stand density?

Key Message:

Context: Leaf area is a key parameter for evaluating growth efficiency of trees, and therefore needs to be measured as consistently and accurately as possible. This is even more important when comparing monospecific and mixed stands.

Aims: The aim of the study is to find combinations of parameters and allometric relationships that can be used to estimate accurately the leaf area of individual trees.

Attitudes, Perceptions, and Utilization of Evidence-Based Practices in Residential Care.

This study reports on results of a national survey conducted in the United States about the attitudes, perceptions and utilization of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in residential care settings. Seventy-five of 118 member agencies (63.6% response rate) of a voluntary national residential care association responded to a web-administered structured survey, which included the Evidence-Based Practices Attitude Scale (Aarons, 2004).

The envelope spike of HIV-1, which consists of three external gp120 and three transmembrane gp41 glycoproteins, recognizes its target cells by successively binding to its primary CD4 receptor and a coreceptor molecule. Until recently, atomic-resolution structures were available primarily for monomeric HIV-1 gp120, in which the V1, V2 and V3 variable loops were omitted (gp120core ), in complex with soluble CD4 (sCD4). Differences between the structure of HIV gp120core in complex with sCD4 and the structure of unliganded simian immunodeficiency virus gp120core led to the hypothesis that gp120 undergoes a major conformational change upon sCD4 binding.

PCMHs, ACOs, and medication management: lessons learned from early research partnerships.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has greatly accelerated the formation of team-based models of care delivery, primarily accountable care organizations (ACOs) and patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs).  Many have written about the need to incorporate medication management services into these systems in order to improve care and reduce total health care costs. Two primary ways of doing so have emerged: (1) an embedded model, whereby pharmacists are employed directly by a physician practice, or (2) a "virtual care team" model, whereby a PCMH or ACO develops an arrangement with external pharmacists in community settings to provide coordinated services.
