A 28-year-old woman presented to eye casualty with signs and symptoms suggestive of optic neuritis following a recent COVID-19 vaccination (the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine). Following examination and investigation, she was found to fit the McDonald criteria for multiple sclerosis and was commenced on disease-modifying therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Ultrafast 2D-IR spectroscopy of the protein Hyd-1 reveals how the protein structure affects the active site's Fe(CO)(CN) unit, uncovering previously unobserved Ni-S states.
  • The study uses 2D-IR to explicitly assign carbonyl (CO) and cyanide (CN) stretching bands and examine the vibrational levels and relaxation dynamics of these modes.
  • Findings indicate that the CO and CN stretching modes behave differently in the enzyme's environment compared to simpler model compounds, highlighting the unique influence of the protein scaffold on enzyme dynamics.

Background: The positive correlation between the incidence of colorectal cancer and age is well known. However, current data demonstrates that there is noticeable age migration in the incidence of colorectal cancer towards young adults highlighting that this disease should no longer be considered to solely affect the elderly. The aim of the study is to analyse the changes in the trend for the age at which colorectal cancer presents, to identify if there is an appreciable age migration towards a younger population.

Liver transplantation has become an effective and valuable option for patients with end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver failure, an acute or chronic condition, results in impaired bile production and excretion, clotting factor production, protein synthesis, and regulation of metabolism and glucose. Some acute conditions of liver disease have the potential to recover if the liver heals on its own.

Early diagnosis of HIV infection and appropriate care reduces morbidity and mortality. As a result, recent guidelines recommend that HIV screening be routinely included in patient care. Routine screening will likely result in more patients being tested prior to seroconversion; fourth-generation assays can facilitate diagnosis in these patients.
