[From shock-waves even to ureterolithotomy: various practical cases].

The Puigvert Urology Centre in Barcelona reports the detailed results of five cases of ureteric stones all treated by first-line shock wave lithotripsy. Only one case obtained a positive result (after 4 sessions). In the other four cases, shock wave therapy had to be completed by ureteroscopy (1 case) or by open surgery (3 cases) to achieve cure.

Significance of ureteral carcinoma in situ in specimens of cystectomy.

In a retrospective review of 242 cystectomy specimens performed for bladder carcinoma, ureteral carcinoma in situ was found in 14 patients (5.7%), unilateral in 12 and bilateral in 2. Pathology of the bladder specimen was pT4 (6 cases), pT3 (3 cases), pT2 (1 case), pT1 (3 cases), and pT0 (1 case).

[Clinical course in patients with BPH operated for acute urine retention].

Between 1980 and 1990, 5,949 cases of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) were detected at the Puigvert Foundation. One thousand of them were randomized for analysis, and it was found that in 347 the indication for surgery was acute urine retention (AUR). During the initial visit the symptoms, their duration, creatinine values, correlation between creatinine and: 1) patients over 70 years, 2) relationship to prostate size, 3) distention of the upper urinary tract, 4) vesical lithiasis, 5) urinary infection, 6) complications, and 7) mortality were analyzed.

[Cytogenetic characteristics and of primary culture in multiple renal tumors].

The incidence of multiple tumours in renal cancer ranges between 1 and 30%. In these cases, it becomes very difficult to differentiate between adenoma and carcinoma just by using conventional methods, particularly in borderline cases. We carried out primary cultures and subsequent cytogenetic studies in 2 patients with multiple renal cancer.
