DDR1 has been linked to schizophrenia (SZ) and myelination. Here, we tested whether DDR1 variants in people at risk for SZ influence white matter (WM) structural variations and cognitive processing speed (PS). First, following a case-control design (Study 1), SZ patients (N = 1193) and controls (N = 1839) were genotyped for rs1264323 and rs2267641 at DDR1, and the frequencies were compared.

Myoclonic encephalopathy after exposure to trichloroethylene.

Trichloroethylene is a widely-used industrial solvent that is absorbed through the digestive or respiratory tracts or cutaneously. It has a selective tropism for the cardiovascular and central nervous systems and may cause death due to cardiac arrest or neurological sequelae. We present the case of a 25-yr-old women who was exposed to trichloroethylene in the workplace for 18 months and who developed a disabling myoclonic encephalopathy.

[Clinical presentation and complications of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in two populations: travelers and immigrants].

Introduction: Plasmodium falciparum malaria is the most aggressive form of this disease, with 90% of cases occurring in Africa. Only natives of malaria-endemic areas can acquire a certain degree of immunity to the disease. It is not known whether immunity is lost when contact with the parasite is discontinued.

Incidence of respiratory viruses among travelers with a febrile syndrome returning from tropical and subtropical areas.

Fifty million people are estimated to travel from industrial countries to the tropics annually. In spite of exhaustive studies and widely different diagnosis among returned patients, some cases of febrile illnesses remain without an etiological diagnosis, suggesting that these cases could be due to viral respiratory tract infections. From August 2005 to October 2006, 118 febrile patients without a specific diagnosis in their first visit at the Center for International Health of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona were included.
