Purpose: To assess the efficacy of low mechanical index (MI) real time grey scale contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) in the differentiation of breast lesions in comparison to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Materials And Methods: 50 lesions previously detected at mammography or conventional US were evaluated by means of CEUS and MRI. Contrast-enhanced examinations were performed with a dedicated equipment (Esatune, Esaote, Genoa, Italy), before and after injection of 4.

The expression of the extracellular matrix-related genes, such as fibronectin, laminin and tenascin C, and apoptosis-related genes, such as bax, bcl2 and survivin, was evaluated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and by immunohistochemistry in normal breast tissue and benign and malignant breast tumors and then correlated to several clinical parameters: estrogen and progesterone receptors, Ki67, ErbB2, tumor size, lymph node status and grading. Seventy-three breast tissue samples were examined. After RNA extraction, an RT-PCR was performed to detect fibronectin, laminin, tenascin C, bax, bcl2 and survivin gene expression.

Autocrine and paracrine mechanisms modulate the synthesis and secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM); moreover, each component of the ECM is capable of modulating the synthesis and release of other ECM molecules. Therefore, the synthesis of ECM glycoprotein fibronectin and laminin was studied in the human breast cancer cell lines MCF7 and MDA MB 23, plated on different ECM. Our results showed that the cells plated on a fibronectin substrate increased laminin synthesis: this event correlated with an increase in alpha2 and alpha3 integrin subunits.

Fifteen patients were enrolled in a pilot study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of menopausal symptoms in tamoxifen-treated patients. Patients were evaluated before treatment and after one, three and six months with the Greene Menopause Index and were treated according to the traditional Chinese medicine. Anxiety, depression, somatic and vasomotor symptoms were improved by the treatment; libido was not modified.
