In the earliest stages of development of the nervous system, the hypophysial stalk has a horizontal disposition (having, above the hypothalamus and below the anterior lobe of the hypophysis, a group of cells placed in the sella turcica). The stalk becomes vertical in the VI--VII month of fetal life. Until the stage corresponding to the length of 92 mm vertex--coccis of the fetus, few blood vessels are to be found in this region; they follow the stalk's direction.

If the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus were built up uniquely from unipolar, big cells, its extension in man would be greater than hitherto admitted: on both sides of the mesencephalic tract, mingled with cells of the locus ceruleus, and in the superior medullary velum. In all sites, beside unipolar cells there are always a few bi- and multipolar cells in the constitution of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus. The big cells of this nucleus are not perfectly spherical, as often suggested, but always somewhat flattened.
