Although mean body lengths of females were significantly greater than males in individuals drawn from two Haematobia irritans (L.) sample populations (n = 20 females and n = 20 males from West Virginia; n = 20 females and n = 20 males from Georgia), there were no significant differences in food canal lengths for females versus males at either site. Variable numbers (21-37) of setiform sensillae occurred throughout the length of the food canal, but such sensillae were significantly aggregated in the distal-most canal region of both sexes at both sites.

The accuracy of risk adjustment is important in developing surgeon profiles. As surgeon profiles are obtained from observational, nonrandomized data, we hypothesized that selection bias exists in how patients are matched with surgeons and that this bias might influence surgeon profiles. We used the Society of Thoracic Surgeons risk model to calculate observed to expected (O/E) mortality ratios for each of six cardiac surgeons at a single institution.

Background: Transient myocardial dysfunction often occurs after ischemia-reperfusion with immature myocardium appearing particularly susceptible. Neutrophil adhesion and activation contribute to ischemia-reperfusion injury after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), possibly resulting in cell death. The hypothesis was that glucocorticoids could prevent reperfusion-induced myocardial dysfunction by blunting leukocyte-mediated injury.

Mutations in cardiac motor protein genes are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Mutations in both the regulatory (Glu22Lys) and essential light chains (Met149Val) result in an unusual pattern of hypertrophy, leading to obstruction of the midventricular cavity. When a human genomic fragment containing the Met149Val essential myosin light chain was used to generate transgenic mice, the phenotype was recapitulated.
