Article Synopsis
  • - Wastewater surveillance has proven effective in tracking the spread of SARS-CoV-2, including its variants, particularly at transportation hubs like Toronto Pearson International Airport.
  • - Canadian municipalities, including WWTPs in Ontario, use techniques like qPCR and whole genome sequencing to monitor the virus in wastewater.
  • - Findings from wastewater samples at the airport often identified new viral lineages 1-4 weeks before clinical cases were reported, highlighting the potential for early detection in pandemic response.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) face neurocognitive challenges, particularly in working memory and processing speed, which may be related to white matter (WM) pathways in the brain.
  • The study involved 13 PBTS and 10 healthy controls (HC), examining their cognitive performance and using MRI to analyze WM microstructure.
  • Results indicated that PBTS had significantly lower neurocognitive performance and exhibited higher mean diffusivity in key WM areas, suggesting that these microstructure alterations are linked to their cognitive difficulties.

We determined correlations between SARS-CoV-2 load in untreated water and COVID-19 cases and patient hospitalizations before the Omicron variant (September 2020-November 2021) at 2 wastewater treatment plants in the Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario, Canada. Using pre-Omicron correlations, we estimated incident COVID-19 cases during Omicron outbreaks (November 2021-June 2022). The strongest correlation between wastewater SARS-CoV-2 load and COVID-19 cases occurred 1 day after sampling (r = 0.

The clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis is inaccurate and can be associated with a negative appendicectomy rate in excess of 40%. The latter has an attendant, albeit low, potential for increased morbidity and mortality, particularly related to infection. In this two year prospective audit of 282 patients presenting with the symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis, preliminary diagnostic laparoscopy (PDL) was performed on 145 patients with the remainder (137) proceeding directly to open appendicectomy.
