Gallbladder stasis and gallstone formation are well-known complications of both fasting-associated total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and long-term treatment with octreotide. Additive noxious effects to hepatobiliary function may develop when both therapies are given together as treatment of enteric fistulae. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of gallstone formation during treatment with TPN and octreotide separately and in combination.

We investigated the expression and accumulation pattern of lipoxygenase isoforms throughout the maize plant life. Two forms of lipoxygenase L1 and L2 have been identified as acidic proteins of 100 kDa (pI 6.4) and 90 kDa (pI 5.

Plasma levels of glucagon, secretin, norepinephrine, arginine-vasopressin, and prostaglandin biosynthesis in the gastric mucosa were determined in cirrhotic patients with gastric vascular ectasia associated with hypoacidity, in cirrhotics without this lesion, and in healthy controls. Plasma concentrations of glucagon, secretin, and norepinephrine were similar in cirrhotics with gastric vascular ectasia and cirrhotics without this lesion, these concentrations being significantly higher (p less than 0.05) than in healthy controls.

Experiments to establish the site of biosynthesis and the possible translocation into microsomes of glutelins-2 (28 kD G2) and low molecular weight zeins (10, 14, 15 kD Z2) have been carried out. Free and membrane-bound polyribosomes as well as microsomal membranes were isolated from immature endosperms of W64A Zea mays L. In vitro translation studies were carried out in the presence and in the absence of membranes using [(35)S]-methionine or [(35)S]-cysteine as precursors.
