Effects of KI encapsulation in single-walled carbon nanotubes by Raman and optical absorption spectroscopy.

The effect of KI encapsulation in narrow (HiPCO) single-walled carbon nanotubes is studied via Raman spectroscopy and optical absorption. The analysis of the data explores the interplay between strain and structural modifications, bond-length changes, charge transfer, and electronic density of states. KI encapsulation appears to be consistent with both charge transfer and strain that shrink both the C-C bonds and the overall nanotube along the axial direction.

An encapsulated helical one-dimensional cobalt iodide nanostructure.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be used as templates for the growth of low-dimensional inorganic materials whose structures and properties often differ greatly from those of the bulk. Here we describe the detailed crystallography of an entire helical one-dimensional cobalt diiodide nanostructure encapsulated within a SWNT. This material has an unprecedented twisted double tetrahedral chain structure arising from a rotation of Co(2)I(4) units along its length.

Novel p53 mutants selected in BRCA-associated tumours which dissociate transformation suppression from other wild-type p53 functions.

Inheritance of germ-line mutant alleles of BRCA1 and BRCA2 confers a markedly increased risk of breast cancer and we have previously reported a higher incidence of p53 mutations in these tumours than in grade matched sporadic tumours. We have now characterized these p53 mutants. The results of these studies identify a novel class of p53 mutants previously undescribed in human cancer yet with multiple occurrences in BRCA-associated tumours which retain a profile of p53-dependent activities in terms of transactivation, growth suppression and apoptosis induction which is close or equal to wild-type.

Health care perceptions of the standardized patient.

As the use of standardized patients (SPs) for education and assessment continues to grow, there becomes an ever-increasing cohort of patients in our clinical practices who have participated as SPs. The present study is part of a five-year longitudinal study to examine the impact of participation as a standardized patient on the perceptions of the standardized patient's own health care. SPs participating in the 1993, 1994 and 1995 Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for medical students at the end of their third year were requested to respond to mailed questionnaires before, immediately after and one year after their participation in the OSCE(s).

Predicted anti-oestrogen resistance in BRCA-associated familial breast cancers.

There is controversy concerning the prognosis of breast cancers arising in women carrying loss of function mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. This study was carried out to assess the likely hormone dependence of this group of tumours in comparison with an age and grade matched group of control sporadic tumours. We used quantitative immunohistochemical analysis for the oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), cyclin D1 and pS2 on sections of primary tumours and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
