Infections caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) cause thousands of deaths worldwide each year. So far, there has been no consensus on whether there is a direct relationship between the incidence of neoplasms and the immunosuppression caused by HIV that could help understand if coinfection increases the likelihood of cervical cancer. The objective of the study was to identify the presence of genetic variants of HPV in a group of HIV-positive women and their possible association with cervical cancer.

Beractant, a natural surfactant, induces an antifibrogenic phenotype and apoptosis in normal human lung fibroblasts (NHLF). As intracellular Ca2+ signalling has been related to programmed cell death, we aimed to assess the effect of beractant on intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in NHLF in vitro. Cultured NHLF were loaded with Fura-2 AM (3 μM) and Ca2+ signals were recorded by microfluorimetric techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the link between vitamin D deficiency and cervical HPV infection in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) through a cross-sectional analysis of 67 patients.
  • Most participants had cervical HPV infections, with 28.4% overall and 68.4% deemed high-risk; however, demographic traits did not differ significantly between those with and without vitamin D deficiency.
  • Results indicated no significant association between vitamin D levels and cervical HPV infection rates, suggesting both conditions are prevalent but not directly connected.
