Article Synopsis
  • The operating room infrastructure and equipment were designed primarily for male surgeons, leading to potential ergonomic challenges for the increasing number of female cardiac surgeons.
  • Female cardiac surgeons comprise only about 17% of the field and experience higher rates of work-related injuries and ergonomic issues compared to their male counterparts.
  • There is a need to adapt OR equipment and surgical tools to better suit female surgeons, which could improve their working conditions and support a more equitable surgical workforce.

Non-enzymatic glycation is the chemical reaction between the amine group of an amino acid and the carbonyl group of a reducing sugar. The final products of this reaction, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), are known to play a key role in aging and many chronic diseases. The kinetics of the AGE formation reaction depends on several factors, including pH, temperature, and the presence of prooxidant metals, such as iron and copper.

Physician associates (PAs) are a developing profession in the UK. The Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA) recommends the establishment of local preceptorship programmes for PAs in the first year of practice who have successfully passed the PA national exam. Article Synopsis
  • * A study using guinea pigs showed that those born preterm experienced significant cardiovascular challenges when exposed to extreme temperatures, mimicking conditions that may arise due to climate change.
  • * This research highlights early signs of cardiovascular dysfunction in preterm-born individuals as young as 8-10 years, suggesting that their bodies respond poorly to both heat and cold, similar to older adults.

Article Synopsis
  • - Endometriosis is a common condition that typically requires surgery for diagnosis, indicating a need for non-invasive biomarkers, such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), though research on EVs in this context is limited.
  • - This study explored how effective it is to isolate EVs from cervico-vaginal fluid using cervical brushes and vaginal swabs, finding that both methods yield intact vesicles with some contaminants, but cervical brushes produced higher particle concentrations.
  • - While both sampling techniques showed similar levels of protein and miRNA, the overall EV yield was low, suggesting that either method could potentially be used for future biomarker research in endometriosis.
