The incidence of vascular injury from external fixation of fractures was studied retrospectively in two surgical departments during the period 1985-1990. A total of 1231 fractures of the lower limb were treated. External fixation was used in the initial stabilization of 28 femoral and 93 tibial fractures.

Intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS) of the liver is a very useful tool during surgery for gastrointestinal tumors or hepatic tumors. In a prospective study of 82 elective operations for 57 gastrointestinal tumors and 25 hepatic tumors or metastases, we compared IOUS with preoperative ultrasonography, CT-scanning and MRI. IOUS supplied additional information in 38% of the operations.

The results and consequences of intra-operative ultrasonography of the liver were studied in 50 patients who had laparotomy for colorectal cancer. Compared with preoperative imaging techniques like US, CT and MRI, intra-operative US had a higher sensitivity for intrahepatic lesions. Especially in case that adjuvant therapy could have been considered, intra-operative US gave relevant information in 10 patients (20%) by altering the stage of the primary tumour.

A case of neurocutaneous melanosis developing a leptomeningeal melanoma is described in a ten year old girl in whom an intraspinal lipoma had been resected seven years earlier. Standard and CT myelographic findings are described and the complementary role of Gadolinium-enhanced MRI is discussed. The literature is reviewed and the association of a lipoma and neurocutaneous melanosis has not been encountered.

In a prospective study of 25 patients, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was employed to detect meniscal tears in the symptomatic knee. All patients underwent arthroscopy and 21 underwent double contrast arthrography. When correlated with these two diagnostic procedures MRI produced no false negative results.
