A rare case of melioidosis presenting as myositis in Sri Lanka.

Background: Melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei is an emerging infection in Sri Lanka with a high case fatality rate. The disease usually manifests as pneumonia, however multisystem involvement is common. Myositis is an extremely rare occurrence and this is the only documented case where the initial presentation of melioidosis has been myositis and later complicated to myonecrosis.

Curative surgery for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: A case report.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma accounts for 3%-4% of thyroid malignancies worldwide and is aggressive in nature with a median survival of 6 months at diagnosis. A 67-year-old lady with a hard goitre presented with compressive symptoms and mild hypothyroidism. Ultrasound scan revealed a Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System 5 lesion with suspicious left-sided cervical lymphadenopathy.

What drives the pesticide user practices among farmers in tropical regions? A case study in Sri Lanka.

Pesticides are widely used in tropical regions of the world, and therefore explorations of user practices and drivers of pesticide usage among farmers are important for sustainable agriculture. Therefore, perceptions, knowledge, and drivers leading to the practices of pesticide use among farmers were explored using a semi-structured questionnaire survey using 246 farmers in upcountry vegetable growing areas and low country field crop cultivation areas in tropical Sri Lanka. The study revealed a significant increase in pesticide usage in upcountry vegetable growing areas.

Land use impacts on river health of Uma Oya, Sri Lanka: implications of spatial scales.

Human actions on landscapes are a principal threat to the ecological integrity of river ecosystems worldwide. Tropical landscapes have been poorly investigated in terms of the impact of catchment land cover alteration on water quality and biotic indices in comparison to temperate landscapes. Effects of land cover in the catchment at two spatial scales (catchment and site) on stream physical habitat quality, water quality, macroinvertebrate indices and community composition were evaluated for Uma Oya catchment in the upper Mahaweli watershed, Sri Lanka.
