Purpose: The double-flap technique (DFT) is an anti-reflux reconstruction procedure performed after proximal gastrectomy (PG), but its complexity and high incidence of anastomotic stenosis are problematic. We conducted this study to demonstrate the efficacy of robot-assisted DFT, with refinements, to address these issues.

Methods: Surgical outcomes were compared between the following procedures modified over time at our institution: conventional open DFT (group O, n = 16); early robotic DFT (group RE, n = 19), which follows the conventional open PG approach; and late robotic DFT (group RL, n = 21), which incorporates refinements to the early robotic DFT technique by exploiting more of the robotic capabilities available.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the standard method for diagnosing diabetic polyneuropathy. Because a clear association between handgrip strength and diabetic neuropathy can serve as a screening tool, the present study evaluated the association between handgrip strength and NCS and diabetes-related complications. A total of 436 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who were admitted to our hospital between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2023, and evaluated using Baba's diabetic neuropathy classification (BDC) were included.

Background/aim: Metastatic patterns are the most convenient and common prediction models for the prognosis of patients with stage IV colorectal cancer. However, current prediction models do not include the severity of metastases in organs and exclude certain types of metastatic patterns. The aim of this study was to develop a prediction model that included several metastatic organs as well as the severity of liver and lung metastases, based on the Japanese Classification of Colorectal, Appendiceal, and Anal Carcinoma: the 3 English Edition.

Purpose: The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate whether early urinary catheter removal is feasible during epidural anesthesia during gastrointestinal surgery in male patients at high risk for urinary retention.

Methods: Male patients who underwent radical surgery for gastric or colon cancer were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Patients were randomized 1:1 into 2 groups: the early group, in which the urinary catheter was removed before removal of the epidural catheter on the second or third postoperative day, and the late group, in which the urinary catheter was removed after removal of the epidural catheter.
