Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed data from the 2015 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey to map malaria prevalence across Nigeria's senatorial districts, identifying key factors influencing higher rates of infection in children under five.
  • The highest malaria prevalence was found in Kebbi South district (70.6%), with significant associations linked to lower wealth, mothers’ secondary education, and lack of mosquito bed nets.
  • Findings emphasized the spatial clustering of malaria and the importance of targeted intervention strategies to effectively reduce transmission in high-prevalence areas.

Verbal autopsy (VA) narratives play a crucial role in understanding and documenting the causes of mortality, especially in regions lacking robust medical infrastructure. In this study, we propose a comprehensive approach to extract mortality causes and identify prevalent diseases from VA narratives utilizing advanced text mining techniques, so as to better understand the underlying health issues leading to mortality. Our methodology integrates n-gram-based language processing, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), and BERTopic, offering a multi-faceted analysis to enhance the accuracy and depth of information extraction.

Background: In South Africa, between 1966 and 2014, there were three kidney transplant eras defined by evolving access to certain immunosuppressive therapies defined as (before availability of cyclosporine), (when cyclosporine became available), and (availability of tacrolimus and mycophenolic acid). As such, factors influencing kidney graft failure may vary across these eras. Therefore, evaluating the consistency and reproducibility of models developed to study these variations using machine learning (ML) algorithms could enhance our understanding of post-transplant graft survival dynamics across these three eras.

Introduction Comorbidities in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) impact negatively on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and life expectancy. We investigated the frequency and spectrum of comorbidities in privately insured South Africans with SLE. Methods The data of SLE patients based on International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes and insured with Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS), South Africa, aged ≥16 years at diagnosis and with ≥6 months of follow-up were reviewed.

Background: There are variations in the numbers of pancreatic cancer deaths reported annually in South Africa (SA). Since pancreatic cancer deaths in SA from 1997 to 2016, the number of cases has hugely increased, and reached 23 581 in both sexes. Sex differences are likely to contribute to the variations in the strength of associations between the risk factors and pancreatic cancer mortality.
