Aging is a dynamic process, in which morphological and physiological changes occur at all levels, making the body more vulnerable to acute events. Elderly people are at greater risk of sepsis developing than younger people. Sepsis is a set of serious manifestations throughout the body produced by an infection, leading to events that compromise cell homeostasis as oxidative stress and is associated with organ dysfunction.

Background: Trichomonas vaginalis is the aetiological agent of human trichomoniasis, which is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases in humans. Iron is an important element for the survival of this parasite and the colonisation of the host urogenital tract.

Objectives: In this study, we investigated the effects of iron on parasite proliferation in the dynamics of pseudocyst formation and morphologically characterised iron depletion-induced pseudocysts.

NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are multimeric proteins, the biological and functional characteristics of which depend on differential subunit assembly during postnatal development. In the present paper, we investigated whether the expression of NMDAR subunits NR1, NR2A, NR2B is influenced by neurotrophins in rat visual cortex. We used a soluble form of the TrkB receptor engineered as an immunoadhesin (TrkB-IgG) in order to block TrkB ligands.

Neurotrophins have been suggested to act as liaison molecules between activity-dependent synaptic plasticity and the establishment of patterns of synaptic connectivity during postnatal developmental in different brain areas, including the visual cortex. In particular, recent studies have shown that Trk B ligands are involved in the formation of the ocular dominance columns during postnatal development. Here, we examined the contribution of endogenous Trk B activation to the regulation of different forms of synaptic plasticity including long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD) and LTP after LTD in the developing visual cortex.
