Epidemiology of malignant brain tumors in Genova, Italy. 1993-2017.

We present an updated analysis on the incidence of primary brain tumors in the Metropolitan Area of Genova, the capital of the northwestern Italian region Liguria.The number of cases and incidence rates for all malignant brain tumors, glioblastoma, malignant brain tumors other than glioblastoma, and brain tumors not otherwise specified were calculated for each of seven three-year and one-eighth four-year periods in which the quarter century 1993-2017 was divided. The rates were age-adjusted (AAR) using the 2013 European standard population, presented per 100,000 person-years and the average percentage change over the three-year period was calculated.

Lifestyle factors and risk of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: a case-control study.

Purpose: Risk factors for leukemia and lymphomas in adults are largely unknown. This study was aimed at evaluating the association between lifestyle factors and the risk of hematological malignancies in an adult population.

Methods: Data were drawn from a population-based case-control study carried out in Italy and included 294 cases (199 lymphoid and 95 myeloid) and 279 controls.

Chronic diseases, medical history and familial cancer, and risk of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in an adult population: a case-control study.

Purpose: This investigation was aimed at evaluating the association between chronic diseases, medical history and familial cancer, and the risk of developing hematological malignancies.

Methods: Data were drawn from a population-based case-control study carried out to assess the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia in an adult population exposed to environmental air pollution in Northern Italy. Each case was classified according to the WHO ICD-O-3 classification.

Effects of STN DBS and auditory cueing on the performance of sequential movements and the occurrence of action tremor in Parkinson's disease.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients show a higher ability to perform repetitive movements when they are cued by external stimuli, suggesting that rhythmic synchronization with an auditory timekeeper can be achieved in the absence of intact basal ganglia function. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is another therapeutic method that improves movement performance in PD and may suppress or enhance action tremor. However, the combined effect of these therapies on action tremor has not been studied yet.

Risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and residential exposure to air pollution in an industrial area in northern Italy: a case-control study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in an adult population residing in an area in northern Italy exposed to industrial air pollution from a big power plant, a coke oven, 2 chemical factories, and some minor plants. The design was a population-based case-control study and information about residential history and the main risk factors for NHL was obtained interviewing 133 cases and 279 controls using a structured questionnaire. Three exposure categories (heavy, moderate, and slight) were defined on the basis of the location of the major facilities with respect to the subject residence.
