Article Synopsis
  • Macrophages play a critical role in immune responses in the oral cavity, but their specific functions in oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) are not well understood.
  • A study analyzed the density of different types of macrophages (CD68 for M1 and CD163 for M2) in cases of OLP, OLL, and a control group of oral inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (OIFH).
  • The findings revealed higher CD68+ macrophage counts in OLP compared to OLL and OIFH, suggesting a significant pro-inflammatory role for these cells in OLP, which could aid in diagnosis and guide future therapeutic strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the density of Langerhans cells in oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) through immunohistochemical analysis.
  • Results showed a significantly higher density of CD207+ cells in OLL compared to OLP, suggesting differences in their immunological profiles.
  • The findings highlight that CD1a+ and CD207+ cells play a more crucial role in the pathogenesis of OLL than in OLP, indicating different mechanisms behind these conditions.

Background: the purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review regarding clinical and histopathological characteristics, immunopathological findings, and treatment for chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS).

Material And Methods: articles in English, published from January 1962 up to November 2017, assessing clinical and immunological features, treatment, and follow-up of patientes with CUS, were retrieved from three databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library and SCOPUS). A manual literature search was also conducted.
