In homeostatic conditions, the basal progenitor cells of the esophagus differentiate into a stratified squamous epithelium. However, in the setting of acid exposure or inflammation, there is a marked failure of basal cell differentiation, leading to basal cell hyperplasia. We have previously shown that lysyl oxidase (LOX), a collagen crosslinking enzyme, is upregulated in the setting of allergic inflammation of the esophagus; however, its role beyond collagen crosslinking is unknown.

Our sample included 405 parents of children (ages 12 and under) who experienced a diversity of disabilities and varied support needs. Although each of the parents wanted their children to experience an array of formative experiences, the extent to which parents were familiar with local resources related to these important areas was uneven and often low.

However, complex and longstanding transition barriers require comprehensive solutions that are tailored to a local community's unique needs and available resources so that local youth with IDD may achieve their desired outcomes. This article presents "virtual community conversations" as a promising approach for bringing together local communities to tackle barriers to good outcomes for residents with IDD.
