Article Synopsis
  • Women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have various options for HIV prevention, allowing them to choose products based on lifestyle and preferences, influenced by acceptability factors.
  • A systematic review analyzed acceptability and preferences for different biomedical HIV prevention methods among women, using peer-reviewed literature published between January 2015 and December 2023.
  • Results showed a preference for long-acting products over daily dosing options like oral PrEP, indicating that user control and partner influences are critical in shaping perceptions and usage.

Background: In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) prognosis is poor due to progressive weakening of the respiratory muscles. Survival and quality of life can be improved by noninvasive ventilation (NIV), which is initially applied while sleeping. The indication for NIV is based on pulmonary function testing (PFT) and polysomnography (PSG) with capnography (tCO).

Long-acting injectable cabotegravir is more effective than daily oral PrEP at preventing HIV transmission due to improved adherence, but requires bi-monthly large-volume intramuscular injections. Subcutaneous (SC) contraceptive implants can be formulated with antiretrovirals for extended-duration HIV PrEP. Islatravir (ISL) is a first-in-class, investigational antiretroviral with pharmacologic properties well-suited for implant delivery.

Background: High-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) is used in pneumological endoscopy for rigid, diagnostic, and therapeutic bronchoscopies. It is unclear to what extent the unobstructed flow of respiratory gas from the patient's lungs causes microbial contamination of the surrounding air.

Material And Methods: After the start of the HFJV (15 min) in 16 rigid bronchoscopies, airborne pathogen measurements were taken directly at the distal endoscope outlet, at examiner height (40 cm above the endoscope outlet), at a 2 m distance from the endoscope in the room and at the supply air outlet of the examination room using an RCS air sampler.

The prevention of HIV and unintended pregnancies is a public health priority. Multi-purpose prevention technologies capable of long-acting HIV and pregnancy prevention are desirable for women. Here, we utilized a preclinical macaque model to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of biodegradable ε-polycaprolactone implants delivering the antiretroviral islatravir (ISL) and the contraceptive etonogestrel (ENG).
