Gender representation within radiology conferences in the UK in 2021.

Aim: To examine the gender representation and equality within academic meetings and society conferences within the UK radiology conferences.

Materials And Methods: UK-based subspecialty radiology meetings organised by major radiological associations and societies (online and in-person) from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021 were included. Speakers and chairs were documented with reference to their gender, years on General Medical Council (GMC) register, academic publications, and h-index.

Telephone Fracture Clinic Consultations: A Satisfactory Solution in Lockdown.

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic was a catalyst to many learning opportunities within clinical practice in the UK. Attempts were made to reduce footfall within all institutions and within the study unit; this led to alterations in fracture clinic provision. An alternative method was developed whereby most of the initial contacts were in person and much of the follow-up was done remotely.

Estimation of blood volume and blood loss in primary total hip and knee replacement: An analysis of formulae for perioperative calculations and their ability to predict length of stay and blood transfusion requirements.

Introduction: Blood loss continues to be a common surgical risk in total hip (THR) and knee replacements (TKR). Accurate prediction of blood loss permits appropriate counselling of risks to patients, target optimisation and forecasting future transfusion requirements. We compared blood volume formulae of Moore and Nadler, and blood loss formulae of Liu, Mercuriali, Bourke, Ward, Gross, Lisander and Meunier, to assess associations between calculated values with length of stay and transfusion requirements and determine which are useful in contemporary practice.

A layered electrospun and woven surgical scaffold to enhance endogenous tendon repair.

Surgical reattachments of tendon to bone in the rotator cuff are reported to fail in around 40% of cases. There are no adequate solutions to improve tendon healing currently available. Electrospun, sub-micron materials, have been extensively studied as scaffolds for tendon repair with promising results, but are too weak to be surgically implanted or to mechanically support the healing tendon.
