Article Synopsis
  • * Recent research highlights that leaves and stems of V. myrtillus L., often neglected as waste, contain high levels of beneficial phenolic compounds, surpassing those found in the fruits in terms of antioxidant properties.
  • * The study confirms that extracts from V. myrtillus L. leaves have significant antioxidant activity and are safe for further research, suggesting these by-products could be useful in pharmaceuticals, food, or cosmetics.

This research investigates the improvements of ozone (O) annealing on the optical and etching characteristics of TiO/AlO multilayer band-pass filters designed for potential optoelectronic applications. The band-pass filters were fabricated using atomic layer deposition (ALD), and their performance was systematically analyzed after the addition of O annealing at moderate temperatures (up to 300 °C). Results reveal that O annealing improves the optical transmittance of the multilayers by approximately 40% without significant spectral changes (∼6 nm).

Exposure to environmental contaminants might play an important role in neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis, such as Parkinson´s disease (PD) and Alzheimer´s disease (AD). For the first time in Spain, the plasmatic levels of 19 mycotoxins from patients diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease (44 PD and 24 AD) and from their healthy companions (25) from La Rioja region were analyzed. The studied mycotoxins were aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1, T-2 and HT-2, ochratoxins A (OTA) and B (OTB), zearalenone, sterigmatocystin (STER), nivalenol, deoxynivalenol, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol, deepoxy-deoxynivalenol, neosolaniol, diacetoxyscirpenol and fusarenon-X.

In this study, we present, for the first time in Spain, the levels of 19 mycotoxins in plasma samples from healthy and sick children (digestive, autism spectrum (ASD), and attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) disorders) ( = 79, aged 2-16). The samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (triple quadrupole) (LC-MS/MS). To detect Phase II metabolites, the samples were reanalyzed after pre-treatment with β-glucuronidase/arylsulfatase.

Aging in mammals is characterized by failure of the homeostatic mechanisms that regulate energy balance. Several mechanisms have been proposed such as the presence of a low-grade chronic inflammation in different tissues, as well as leptin and insulin resistance, but the primary alteration is not fully elucidated. The gut microbiota has recently emerged as a key player in a variety of metabolic and neurological disorders.
