Background: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) for cervical cancer screening presents the advantage that cytological and virological investigations can be undertaken from the same specimen. Nevertheless, the fixative may alter DNA integrity and the sample may be inadequate for HPV DNA detection. The Novaprep(®) Vial Test (NVT) (Novacyt, Vélizy-Villacoublay, France) is a new device dedicated to LBC which permits an automated cell spreading over slides and an automated cell sampling for molecular analyses.

Gene expression profiles have been associated with clinical outcome in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with anthracycline-containing chemotherapy. Using Affymetrix HU133A microarrays, we analyzed the lymphoma transcriptional profile of 30 patients treated with CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) and 23 patients treated with rituximab (R)-CHOP in the Groupe d'Etude des Lymphomes de l'Adulte clinical centers. We used this data set to select transcripts showing an association with progression-free survival in all patients or showing a differential effect in the two treatment groups.

Lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (LPHL), according to the Revised European-American Lymphoma classification, was considered on a retrospective basis as a specific clinical entity with a large majority of patients at clinical stage (CS) IA or IIA. Of the 500 patients with CS IA/IIA Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) prospectively treated between 1981 and 1996 by one or 3 courses of anthracycline-based chemotherapies combined with high-dose extended irradiation, disease in 42 patients was reclassified as LPHL. These 42 patients, none of whom had mediastinal involvement (MI), were compared with the 458 patients with classical HL (cHL), 144 without MI and 314 with MI.

Persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis is usually reported in young smoking women. Whether this syndrome represents a premalignant or benign disease remains unclear. Indeed, because of the association of Bcl-2/IgH rearrangement and cytogenetic abnormalities, such cases may be misdiagnosed as the leukemic phase of a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
