Induction chemotherapy followed by response evaluation and esophagectomy for advanced esophageal cancer.

Introduction: Patients with limited metastatic/advanced esophageal cancer not amenable for neoadjuvant therapy plus surgery have a poor prognosis and often receive palliative care. Alternatively, induction chemotherapy with response evaluation can be considered and in some patients surgery with curative intent may become feasible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients treated with induction chemotherapy and to identify patient and/or tumor characteristics associated with survival.

Pattern of recurrence in patients with a pathologically complete response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery for oesophageal cancer.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery is a widely used treatment for locally advanced resectable oesophageal cancer, with 20-50 per cent of patients having a pathological complete response (pCR). Disease, however, still recurs in 20-30 per cent of these patients. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of recurrence in patients with a pCR after nCRT and surgery.

Many patients with Oesophageal Adenocarcinoma (OAC) do not benefit from chemoradiotherapy treatment due to therapy resistance. To better understand the mechanisms involved in resistance and to find potential biomarkers, we investigated the association of microRNAs, which regulate gene expression, with the response to individual treatments, focusing on radiation. Intrinsic radiation resistance and chemotherapy drug resistance were assessed in eight OAC cell lines, and miRNA expression profiling was performed via TaqMan OpenArray qPCR.

Tumor microRNA-126 controls cell viability and associates with poor survival in patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Unlabelled: Esophageal adenocarcinoma displays a poor prognosis and current treatments are often not curative. Pathological TNM-stage is a prognostic parameter, but a better understanding of the pathophysiology of esophageal adenocarcinoma is needed to better predict survival. Recent work in other malignancies indicated an important role for the regulator microRNA-126 (miR-126) in tumors.

Long-term outcomes 1-20 years after autotransplantation of teeth: clinical and radiographic evaluation of 66 premolars and 8 molars.

In this retrospective study we investigated the long-term survival of autotransplanted premolars and molars with incompletely developed roots. The presence of the transplanted teeth and their outcome after autotransplantation was ascertained from clinical and radiographic evaluation by a maxillofacial surgeon or dentist. Kaplan Meier survival curves were estimated for the total population and for the two groups (premolars and molars).
