Background: Canine parvovirus (CPV) is the most important viral cause of acute canine enteritis leading to severe damage of the intestinal barrier. It has been speculated that dogs might develop chronic disorders after surviving CPV infection. However, no studies regarding the long-term implications of CPV infection have been published to date.

The validation of an educational database for children with profound intellectual disabilities.

Background: The Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability took the South African Government to court in 2010 on its failure to implement the right to education for Children with Severe and Profound Intellectual Disability. Subsequently, multidisciplinary teams were appointed by the Western Cape Education Department to deliver services to the Special Care Centres (SCCs). Initially, minimal information was available on this population.

Insertion of the intraaortic balloon pump via the ascending aorta or the aortic arch using the HEARTSTRING Proximal Seal System.

Purpose: The HEARTSTRING Proximal Seal System is used to avoid aortic clamping to insert the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) in the ascending aorta or the aortic arch. This technique is used when calcification or atheroma prevents side clamping of the ascending aorta or the aortic arch.

Description: A vein graft or a small-caliber vascular prosthesis for the later insertion of the IABP is sewn to the ascending aorta or the aortic arch using the HEARTSTRING Proximal Seal System.

A total of 204 Ergasilus sarsi, a copepod, were collected from Tanganyika Killifish Lamprichthys tanganicanus in Lake Tanganyika during March 2010. The prevalence was 86.40%, the mean intensity was 7.

Sternal closure after median sternotomy: a new technique using titanium hooks and wires applied parasternally.

Objectives: Osteosynthetic closure of the chest after median sternotomy is usually performed with steel wires. We describe, for the first time, a case series in which titanium hooks were implanted from the sternal surface in patients who required secondary or additional stabilization. In comparison to the classic wires, the diameters of the hooks are approximately three times bigger and therefore reduce the risk of cutting through the bones.
