Inactivation of plasmin by a 3-4-fold molar excess of antithrombin III follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and the apparent rate constants are proportional to the concentration of the inhibitor. Heparin accelerates the inactivation reaction without changing its pseudo-first-order character, and the apparent rate constants are also proportional to the concentration of the polysaccharide. Stringent and relaxed Escherichia coli strains grown on minimal and on differently enriched media produced guanosine polyphosphates in the stationary phase of growth. On transition from the logarithmic to the stationary phase, stringent strains started to produce guanosine 5' triphosphate 3' diphosphate (pppGpp). and guanosine 5' diphosphate 3' diphosphate (ppGpp), while relaxes strains accumulated only ppGpp.

The studies presented were undertaken to clarify the unsettled question whether the synthesis of histones with a N-acetylserine residue at the amino terminal end is initiated with methionine. Histones were synthesized in vitro in a rabbit reticulocyte lysate, primed with a mRNA preparation from ascites cells. Initiation of polypeptide synthesis was investigated by using N-formyl[35S]met-tRNAfMet from yeast to label the N-termini.
