Risk factors for esophageal cancer in a high-incidence area of Malawi.

Purpose: To explore associations of nutritional, infectious, and lifestyle factors with esophageal cancer (EC) occurrence in a high-risk area of Malawi.

Methods: This case-control study was performed with 227 patients undergoing endoscopy for dysphagia or other upper gastrointestinal complaints. Data on clinicopathological characteristics and risk factors were collected using a questionnaire developed for this study specifically.

Supply the demand: Assessment of the feasibility of local nonurologists in relieving the burden of chronic indwelling catheters in a low-income country.

Introduction: Despite the high prevalence rates of urinary retention in sub-Saharan Africa, regional deficiencies in urological care have culminated in inadequate medical management and a backlog of urology cases. Our study examined the efficacy and safety of a surgical camp enlisting local non-urologists performing simple open prostatectomy on the rate of chronic catheter usage secondary to urinary retention.

Methods: We reported on a prospective case series of patients with chronic indwelling catheters who underwent open simple prostatectomy during a one-week urology camp in the Machinga District of Malawi.

A case of acute necrotizing pancreatitis: Practical and ethical challenges of a North-South partnership.

Introduction: The Departments of Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, Malawi, formed a partnership of service, training, and research in 2008. We report a case of recurrent pancreatitis leading to pancreatic necrosis treated at KCH.

Presentation Of Case: A 42 year-old male presented to KCH with his fourth episode of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
