A novel, user-friendly bioreactor for the cultivation of cellularised membranes for tissue engineering has been successfully designed, manufactured, and validated. This bioreactor features a culture vessel and a cover, the latter equipped with one or more sidewalls to ensure airtightness in two distinct zones, thereby maintaining sterile conditions. The cover, designed to integrate seamlessly with the culture vessel, includes several ports compatible with commercial connectors.

Globally, a leg is amputated approximately every 30 seconds, with an estimated 85 percent of these amputations being attributed to complications arising from diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), as stated by the American Diabetes Association. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a risk factor resulting in DFU and can, either independently or in conjunction with diabetes, lead to recurring, slow-healing ulcers and amputations. According to guidelines amputation is the recommended treatment for patients with no-option critical ischemia of the limb (CTLI).

An unprecedented global social and economic impact as well as a significant number of fatalities have been brought on by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), produced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Acute SARS-CoV-2 infection can, in certain situations, cause immunological abnormalities, leading to an anomalous innate and adaptive immune response. While most patients only experience mild symptoms and recover without the need for mechanical ventilation, a substantial percentage of those who are affected develop severe respiratory illness, which can be fatal.

  • A retrospective analysis of 25 patients showed that 36% had major CHD, and there were no significant differences in surgical outcomes, including complications and operative time, between patients with and without these risk factors.
  • The study concludes that thoracoscopic repair is feasible for patients with CHD or LBW, but each case should be evaluated individually due to the technical complexity of the procedure.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disorder specifically targeting pancreatic islet beta cells. Despite many efforts focused on identifying new therapies able to counteract this autoimmune attack and/or stimulate beta cells regeneration, TD1M remains without effective clinical treatments providing no clear advantages over the conventional treatment with insulin. We previously postulated that both the inflammatory and immune responses and beta cell survival/regeneration must be simultaneously targeted to blunt the progression of disease.
