Materials characterizing the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Republic of Daghestan which arose as the consequence of the emergency situation caused by the high flood and inundation in summer 2002 are presented. The work of the sanitary and epidemiological service, carried out in cooperation with the relevant departments, on the organization and realization of measures aimed at preventing the deterioration of the epidemiological situation on the territories of the republic, affected by the natural calamity, is described. As shown in the presented materials, all these measures made it possible to ensure the effective control on the sanitary, hygienic and epidemiological situation in the republic and to prevent the appearance and spread of the outbreaks of infectious diseases.

In Daghestan in the focus of the flood-plain swamp type 64 persons fell ill with tularemia in 1999. During the epizootological survey 8 Francisella tularensis strains were isolated from vectors and carriers and in 7 samples taken from open water reservoirs, as well as in 1 sample obtained from Ixodes ticks, tularemia antigen was detected. Humans were infected mainly by the transmissive route, as found in 71.

The detailed description of measures aimed at ensuring the sanitary and epidemiological safety of the population of Daghestan at the period of hostilities on its territory in 1999. At the finish of the antiterrorist operation an opinion was advanced on the deterioration of the epidemic situation in infections on the territory of hostilities, as well as in the whole of the republic. Nevertheless, due to the measures taken by the sanitary and epidemiological service of the republic, its well-coordinated work and its effective cooperation with different ministries and departments complications in the epidemiological situation in the Republic of Daghestan could be avoided.
