The necessity to improve the metallographic analysis systems to automate diagnostics of the condition of the metals for all their characteristics has been substantiated. The metallographic analysis algorithm based on the use of neural networks for recognizing metal microstructures and a case-based reasoning approach for determining the metal grade is proposed. The structure of a multilayer neural network to determine the metals quantitative parameters has been developed.

Soil surface moisture is one of the key parameters for describing the hydrological state and assessing the potential availability of water for irrigated plants. Because the radar backscattering coefficient is sensitive to soil moisture, the application of Sentinel-1 data may support soil surface moisture mapping at high spatial resolution by detecting spatial and temporal changes at the field scale for precision irrigation management. This mapping is required to control soil water erosion and preferential water flow to improve irrigation water efficiency and minimise negative impacts on surface and ground water bodies.

In this study, adults, who were naïve to organic chemistry, drew stereoisomers of molecules and explained their drawings. From these explanations, we identified nine strategies that participants expressed during those explanations. Five of the nine strategies referred to properties of the molecule that were explanatorily to solving the problem; the remaining four referred to properties that were explanatorily to the solution.

Purpose: Prolonged air leak (PAL) is a challenging complication in thoracic surgery. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of PAL.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 319 patients treated in a single center submitted to lobectomy, bilobectomy, segmentectomy, and wedge resections from January 2012 until August 2015.
