Inequities in COVID-19-Related Patient Outcomes by Socio-Demographic Characteristics: A Scoping Review.

Socio-demographic inequities in health treatment and outcomes are not new. However, the COVID-19 pandemic presented new opportunities to examine and address biases. This article describes a scoping review of 170 papers published prior to the onset of global vaccinations and treatment (December 2021).

Efficacy of supplemental oxygen in reducing the need for laser or intravitreal bevacizumab in preterm infants with stage 2 retinopathy of prematurity.

Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease that affects preterm infants born younger than 30 weeks of gestation. The pathophysiology of ROP involves an initial vaso-obliterative phase followed by vaso-proliferative phase that leads to disease progression. The use of supplemental oxygen during the vaso-proliferative phase of ROP has been associated with reduced disease progression, but how this impacts the need for ROP treatment is unclear.

Hysteresis in phase volumes, compositions and interfacial roughness in model OPV-small-molecule/polymer thin-films.

Domain morphology and composition, and the structure of interfaces between domains are key factors in the performance and stability of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) fabricated from polymer/small-molecule blends. In this study, we investigate the evolution of composition, phase-volume and interfacial roughness in model polymer/small-molecule bilayers, in response to thermal annealing. Polystyrene/fullerene mixing is studied as a function of annealing temperature, using neutron reflectivity, in thin-film bilayer samples comprising pure component or mixed layers.

Study of volatile compounds profiles in milk matrices using Enterococcus faecalis EstA and Rhizomucor miehei lipase.

The use of esterase/lipase enzymes of different origins in food industry is a widely employed strategy to enhance the formation of characteristic aromatic compounds derived from fat and diversify flavour. In the present work, we studied EstA enzyme of Enterococcus faecalis and a high purity Rhizomucor miehei lipase (Palatase). EstA was obtained recombinantly in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3), and optimum esterase activity was detected at pH 6.

Clinical emergency care quality indicators in Africa: a scoping review and data summary.

Objectives: Emergency care services are rapidly expanding in Africa; however, development must focus on quality. The African Federation of Emergency Medicine consensus conference (AFEM-CC)-based quality indicators were published in 2018. This study sought to increase knowledge of quality through identifying all publications from Africa containing data relevant to the AFEM-CC process clinical and outcome quality indicators.
