Article Synopsis
  • Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) is a newly identified pathogen linked to reproductive issues in pigs, notably in intensive farming setups.
  • A case study from a semi-outdoor Iberian sow farm highlighted significant reproductive disease symptoms, including a rise in mummified fetuses and stillborn piglets primarily among gilts, while multiparous sows remained unaffected.
  • Investigations confirmed the presence of PCV3 through tissue analysis, displaying specific lesions such as lymphohistiocytic myocarditis, marking the first documented incidence of PCV3 reproductive disease in this farming system.

Article Synopsis
  • - Porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) is a serious condition affecting pigs, mainly linked to porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) and potentially associated with other strains (PCV-3 and PCV-4).
  • - A study analyzed 102 PDNS cases through various methods like PCR and immunohistochemistry to investigate the presence of different porcine circoviruses.
  • - Results showed that all PDNS cases tested positive for PCV-2, with a subset also showing PCV-3, while no link was found between PDNS and PCV-1 or PCV-4, reinforcing the idea that PCV-2 is likely the primary cause of PDNS

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines a 1:1 cocrystal of a specific aromatic compound and acetic acid to explore how fluorine (F) atoms enhance π-π interactions in the molecular structure.
  • The cocrystal's structure is analyzed using crystallographic techniques, revealing hydrogen bonding and significant π-π interactions between the molecules.
  • Results indicate that the presence of fluorine atoms plays a crucial role in facilitating these interactions without the need for complete halogenation of the aromatic ring.

The prediction of protein 3D structure from amino acid sequence is a computational grand challenge in biophysics and plays a key role in robust protein structure prediction algorithms, from drug discovery to genome interpretation. The advent of AI models, such as AlphaFold, is revolutionizing applications that depend on robust protein structure prediction algorithms. To maximize the impact, and ease the usability, of these AI tools we introduce APACE, AlphaFold2 and advanced computing as a service, a computational framework that effectively handles this AI model and its TB-size database to conduct accelerated protein structure prediction analyses in modern supercomputing environments.

Article Synopsis
  • Scholars advocate for the quick provision of free HIV treatment to migrants living with HIV (MLWH) to improve their health outcomes and experiences.
  • In a 96-week study, MLWH received a specific medication and completed eight different surveys assessing factors like social support, stigma, psychological distress, and treatment satisfaction at various intervals.
  • The results showed that while MLWH generally had good treatment self-efficacy and satisfaction, their experiences of social support and stigma varied significantly based on sociodemographic factors, such as birth region and sexual orientation.
