  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a significant cause of vision loss in working-age individuals, particularly in Bulgaria, where a study aimed to assess its prevalence among diabetic patients.
  • The study examined nearly 600 diabetic patients in Varna from January 2022 to January 2023, finding that 39.9% had some form of DR, with higher rates in Type 1 diabetes patients and those on insulin treatment.
  • The results highlight the urgent need for a national screening program to address DR, leveraging technology to improve early detection and treatment, especially in rural areas.

Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), the leading commercial in situ bitumen recovery process, involves the underground injection of steam and produces at the well head a hot fluid containing water, hydrocarbons, and sand. This fluid is subjected to separation by diluent addition and gravity in several parallel treaters. Occasionally, the separation may be disrupted in one or few treaters by the occurrence of an unresolved interface or "rag layer" while continuing without disruption in the rest of the treaters.

With the improvement of medical devices for diagnosis and radiotherapy, concerns about the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation are also growing. There is no consensus among scientists on whether they might have beneficial effects on humans in certain cases or pose more risks, making the exposure unreasonable. While the damaging consequences of high-dose radiation have been known since the discovery of radioactivity, low-dose effects present a much bigger investigative challenge.

Background: Most thyroid and parathyroid surgeries are performed by nonfellowship trained, low-volume surgeons with associated higher complication rates. Furthermore, the average number of endocrine procedures performed by general surgery residents is decreasing. While previous studies have documented a lack of general surgery resident confidence in performing these procedures, the specific knowledge gaps in endocrine surgery remain unexplored.
