Quantification of parasites in the context of Chagas disease is required to monitor the treatment with benznidazole, disease-associated cardiomyopathies and graft rejection after heart transplantation. As parasitological exams lack sensitivity, Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (rt-PCR) has emerged to evaluate the parasite load in blood samples and cardiac biopsies. However, despite its higher sensitivity, rt-PCR does not provide information on the location and distribution of amastigote nests within infected tissues, the characterization of inflammatory infiltrates or changes to tissue architecture.

Article Synopsis
  • Leishmaniasis is a global health issue that's often overlooked, with current treatments being inadequate.
  • A study examined the use of triglyceride-rich nanoparticles (TGNP) as a delivery method for amphotericin B (AB) to treat Leishmania amazonensis, showing better tolerability and effectiveness compared to standard AB therapy.
  • TGNP-AB demonstrated lower toxicity to healthy cells and significantly reduced the size of lesions and parasitic load in treated mice, highlighting its potential as a safer and more effective treatment option.

Many studies have assessed the effects of incorporation of plant feedstuffs in fish diets on growth performance, whereas few studies have addressed the effects of fish meal replacement by plant protein sources on fish immune parameters. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects on immune response of different inclusion levels of carob seed germ meal (CSGM) as partial replacement for fish meal in diets for meagre (Argyrosomus regius) juveniles. Fish were fed four experimental diets with increased CSGM inclusion levels [0% (control), 7.

Dextran-coated poly (n-butyl cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles (PBCA-NPs) were prepared and were evaluated for enhanced delivery of a promising anti-Leishmania drug candidate, hydroxymethylnitrofurazone (NFOH), to phagocytic cells. Currently available chemotherapy for leishmaniasis, such as pentavalent antimonials, presents low safety and efficacy. Furthermore, widespread drug resistance in leishmaniasis is rapidly emerging.
