Seventeen species of mammals and seven species of birds from Ossabaw Island, Georgia, were tested for vesicular stomatitis (VS) neutralizing antibodies. Seropositive results were restricted to mammals with six of 17 species testing seropositive for VS (New Jersey type) neutralizing antibodies. Seropositive species included: raccoons (Procyon lotor), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), feral swine (Sus scrofa), cattle (Bos taurus), horses (Equus caballus), and donkeys (Equus asinus).

This study was conducted to develop a rapid test to detect type specific antibodies to various strains of vesicular stomatitis virus. Glycoprotein was extracted from purified vesicular stomatitis virus-Indiana 3 and used as antigen in an immunoelectroosmophoresis test (counter immunoelectrophoresis) to test reactivity with homologous hyperimmune serum and antisera to vesicular stomatitis virus-New Jersey, Indiana 1 and Indiana 2. A reaction was only detected with the homologous antiserum.

Sera from male mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) collected in November 1977 in Otero County, New Mexico were tested fro antibodies to bovine virus diarrhea virus (BVDV), bluetongue virus (BTV), and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). Neutralizing antibodies were detected in 26 of 76 (34%) sera tested for BVDV (titer greater than or equal to 1:16). Of 46 sera tested for antibodies to BTV and EHDV, 10 (22%) and 3 (7%), respectively, were positive.

Mosquitoes trapped during an epizootic of hog cholera (HC) in Maryland in 1969 were prepared into 40 pools which were inoculated in pigs. Hog cholera virus was confirmed in pigs inoculated with 8 of 40 pools of mosquitoes. Generally, the pigs contracting HC developed chronic infections with persistent viremia that lasted 30 or more days.
